COMBINED RESEARCH FRAMEWORK — MICROSTRUCTURE × REGIME INTELLIGENCE

Regime-conditioned order flow dynamics: liquidity, displacement, and structural context.

This paper formally combines Narion's two previously independent research tracks — the Institutional Flow Anticipation Engine's (IFAE) microstructure state Xt, and the Regime Intelligence Engine's six-dimensional composite structural state Rt — into a single joint research question: does conditioning order-flow and liquidity dynamics on structural regime context materially change the probability of forward price displacement, including the probability of entering a volatility-expansion state.

Consistent with Narion's disclosure practice, the combined hypothesis, the integration architecture, and empirical findings drawn from Narion's internal validation program are disclosed in academic form. Closed-form feature mathematics, regime-scoring formulas, and proprietary calibration internals remain withheld — see Disclosure & Scope (Section 11).

ABSTRACT
We study whether the informational content of short-horizon order-flow and liquidity signals is conditional on a market's broader structural state. Building on two previously independent research tracks — a seven-signal microstructure state Xt derived from order-book and trade-flow dynamics (Narion's Institutional Flow Anticipation Engine, IFAE), and a six-dimensional composite structural state Rt spanning trend, momentum, volatility regime, positioning, and price structure (Narion's Regime Intelligence Engine) — we formalize a single joint hypothesis: that the probability of forward price displacement conditioned jointly on microstructure state and regime state differs materially from the same probability conditioned on microstructure state alone. We report evidence from a thirteen-stage internal validation program run against BTC perpetual futures shadow-trading data, encompassing model performance validation, execution architecture research, single-dimension market-context analysis, exact and compressed composite-regime reliability scoring, full-population confidence calibration, and a statistically rigorous forward-episode audit. The evidence supports the combined hypothesis directionally and, in specific cases, decisively — most notably a volatility-expansion effect in which the same execution-qualified signal population converts into a materially higher realized hit rate under a normal volatility regime than under active expansion, and a trend-strength effect in which the identical signal's edge is independently confirmed as destroyed once trend strength reaches its most extreme state, across three separate analytical layers. At the same time, the evidence is characterized honestly: composite-regime evidence remains fragmented across a combinatorial state space far larger than what real markets visit, confidence calibration reverses direction depending on the granularity at which it is measured, and forward-episode counts for several regime-neighborhood candidates remain statistically underpowered. We conclude that regime conditioning is empirically real but that its production application requires continued, disciplined evidence accrual rather than an early promotion to live deployment.

Two literatures that rarely speak to each other.

Market microstructure research and financial regime-switching research have developed largely as separate literatures, despite an obvious complementarity. This paper's premise is that combining them is not a novel theoretical move so much as an overdue empirical one.

The microstructure literature establishes that order flow is informative about price formation and that price impact is a well-behaved, if nonlinear, function of flow. Sequential and strategic trade models — Glosten & Milgrom's specialist-quote model and Kyle's continuous-auction model — remain the founding formal treatments of how informed order flow moves prices [1,2]. Cont, Kukanov & Stoikov formalized order flow imbalance (OFI) as a short-horizon linear predictor of price change from order-book events [3], and a substantial empirical literature since has documented that price impact is better described as concave in order size than linear — the square-root impact law — and that the same signed flow can produce materially different impact depending on prevailing liquidity conditions [4,5]. Order-flow toxicity measures such as VPIN extend this by asking whether the composition of flow, not just its sign, carries forward information about liquidity-provider withdrawal [6].

Separately, the regime-switching literature — beginning with Hamilton's Markov-switching model of macroeconomic time series and extended extensively to financial returns, volatility, and asset allocation — establishes that financial variables often behave as though drawn from a small number of discrete, persistent states rather than a single stationary process, and that the parameters governing returns, volatility, and cross-asset relationships differ materially across those states [7,8].

What is comparatively underexplored is the direct combination of the two: whether a microstructure signal's own informational content — not merely the unconditional distribution of returns — is itself regime-dependent. A small applied literature has begun to test order-flow-conditioned impact and machine-learning approaches to forecasting order flow imbalance under varying conditions [9,10], but a systematic study conditioning a validated microstructure displacement signal on an explicit, multi-dimensional structural regime taxonomy — trend, trend strength, volatility expansion, positioning, and price structure jointly — is, to our knowledge, not established in the published literature. This paper reports Narion's empirical attempt to close that gap using its own production research infrastructure.

Identical order flow does not carry the same meaning in every regime.

Narion's two research tracks were, until this paper, deliberately kept separate: IFAE studies the order-flow information content of trade and order-book activity in isolation (state Xt), and Regime Intelligence studies whether the market's broader structural condition is itself persistent and non-random (state Rt), independent of any specific downstream signal. This paper states, for the first time, the combined research bet that motivated keeping both programs running in parallel: that these two states are not independent inputs to be averaged, but jointly determine the probability of forward price displacement.

P(Yt = 1 | Xt, Rt)  ≠  P(Yt = 1 | Xt)
Eq. 1 — Combined regime-conditioning hypothesis. The probability of forward displacement, conditioned jointly on microstructure state and composite regime state, is hypothesized to differ materially from the same probability conditioned on microstructure state alone.
Yt
DISPLACEMENT OUTCOME AT TIME t
Xt
MICROSTRUCTURE STATE (IFAE SIGNAL FAMILY)
Rt
SIX-DIMENSIONAL COMPOSITE REGIME STATE
P(·)
CONDITIONAL PROBABILITY OF DISPLACEMENT

This is a strictly stronger and more falsifiable claim than either track's own standalone hypothesis. IFAE's governing hypothesis only requires that Xt carry some information about Yt. Regime Intelligence's governing hypothesis only requires that Rt be structured and persistent in its own right. Eq. 1 additionally requires an interaction: that the function mapping Xt to displacement probability itself changes shape across values of Rt, rather than Rt simply adding an independent, additive adjustment. Sections 04–06 report the empirical program built to test this, and Section 05 shows that the interaction is, in specific and reproducible cases, large.

RELATION TO THE TWO STANDALONE HYPOTHESES
This paper does not replace either track's own governing hypothesis, published separately in Narion's IFAE and Regime Intelligence research modules. It sits above them: it is the joint claim that was deliberately deferred until both standalone hypotheses had accumulated independent supporting evidence, consistent with the research posture stated in those modules.

One decision pipeline, two conditioning inputs.

Both Xt and Rt are computed as independent, live per-bar reconstructions inside Narion Execution Research Infrastructure, then combined downstream rather than merged into a single model. This separation is deliberate: it keeps each state independently testable (as documented in their own research modules) while still allowing their joint effect on displacement probability to be studied directly.

#
Stage
Role
1
Microstructure Intelligence (Xt)
IFAE's seven-signal family and gradient-boosted classifier (Model_D) produce a live displacement probability, p_long, from order-book and trade-flow dynamics alone.
2
Regime Intelligence (Rt)
Six independent engines classify trend, trend strength, market cycle, volatility expansion, VWAP positioning, and structural location into a composite regime string, computed independently of Xt.
3
Candidate Generation
A candidate engine determines whether Xt clears a confidence bucket sufficient to be evaluated at all — a filtering step prior to any regime conditioning.
4
Joint Conditioning & Reliability Scoring
Every execution-qualified candidate is stamped with its concurrent composite regime Rt, and regime-conditional outcome statistics — hit rate, displacement, expectancy, and calibration — are computed jointly, the subject of Sections 04–06.
5
Research Policy & Execution
A deterministic policy layer, described in Narion's Execution Research module, uses regime-conditional evidence — where sufficiently validated — as a trust-weighting context rather than as a standalone trigger.

Neither Xt nor Rt is discarded or overwritten by this integration; both remain independently published and independently validated. What is new in this paper is the joint outcome statistics computed at their intersection.

Thirteen stages, each conditioning the next.

Testing Eq. 1 required moving well beyond a single backtest. Narion's internal validation program proceeds through thirteen sequential stages, each reconciled independently against the raw output of its underlying audit scripts rather than against narrative summaries — a discipline maintained specifically because, as Section 07 discusses, several of the program's own audit scripts were found to disagree with each other on the same underlying statistics.

Stage 1
Model Performance Validation
Does Xt's probability output and structural confidence state correspond to statistically distinguishable forward outcomes, independent of execution or regime.
Stage 2
Execution Research
Given the Stage 1 candidate region, what target size, stop size, holding period, and exit logic convert observed continuation behavior into a repeatable architecture.
Stages 3–4
Market Context & Exact Regime Reliability
Which single-dimension regime states, and which exact six-dimensional composite regimes, improve or weaken the execution-qualified edge.
Stage 5
Regime Validation Engine (Wilson / Bayesian)
Re-scores the same composite regimes with confidence-interval and shrinkage-based statistics, deliberately more conservative on small samples.
Stage 6
Full-Population Confidence Profile
Characterizes composite-regime behavior across the complete shadow dataset, unfiltered by confidence threshold, to size available population per regime.
Stage 7
Confidence Calibration Research
Tests whether Xt's stated confidence is a calibrated probability, at both the exact composite-regime level and the single-dimension bucket level.
Stage 8
Regime Compression
Tests whether collapsing the exact regime taxonomy to fewer dimensions preserves usable signal while reducing sample fragmentation.
Cross-Report
Reconciliation Audits
Independent reconciliation passes that check every headline figure against raw audit-script output and document, rather than silently resolve, disagreements.
Phase 7
Regime-Neighborhood Evidence Audit
A statistically rigorous re-derivation of forward regime-neighborhood evidence, applying episode-level de-duplication, power analysis, and multiplicity correction.

Where the combined hypothesis is supported — and where it is not.

Five findings, drawn from the reconciled research program, bear most directly on Eq. 1. Each is reported here at the level of a research result — what was found and how strongly — consistent with how Narion discloses validation outcomes elsewhere; the internal scoring formulas and thresholds that produced them remain proprietary (Section 11).

01
The unconditional edge is structural, not directional
Across confidence thresholds, Xt's raw directional hit rate is frequently close to, or non-monotonic around, chance, while mean forward return, maximum favorable excursion, and displacement frequency rise cleanly and monotonically with confidence. The model's genuine unconditional signal is in the achievable size of a move, not in getting the direction right more often than not — which is precisely the condition under which regime context has the most to add.
EVIDENCE — Stage 1, multiple independent confidence-threshold and confidence-bucket audits
02
Extreme trend strength destroys the edge — confirmed three independent ways
The same execution-qualified signal population shows deteriorating hit rate, return, and profit factor once trend strength reaches its most extreme classified state. This is independently reconfirmed by exact-regime reliability scoring (the corresponding composite regime is graded at the most cautionary policy tier) and, separately, by confidence calibration (the same composite regime is flagged systematically overconfident at every tested threshold, with hit rate falling as stated confidence rises). Three independent analytical layers — raw performance, regime-level scoring, and calibration — agree.
EVIDENCE — Stage 3 (market context), Stage 4/5 (regime reliability), Stage 7 (calibration)
03
VWAP positioning is positional, not directional
Regimes sharing an identical distance-from-VWAP positioning state, but differing on every other dimension, span a wide range of outcomes with both signs — while the positioning dimension itself, held fixed, is the single most robust source of heterogeneity identified anywhere in the composite-regime audit. This is reported, after independent statistical re-derivation, as the program's strongest supported structural conclusion.
EVIDENCE — Stage 3 (VWAP context), Phase 7 audit (Finding 17.3)
04
Confidence calibration reverses direction with conditioning granularity
At the single-dimension bucket level — trend, cycle, strength, expansion, location, and VWAP considered individually — the model is systemically underconfident: realized hit rates exceed what stated confidence implies almost everywhere. At the exact composite-regime level, the most extended states show the opposite: overconfidence that worsens as stated confidence rises. Both are correct simultaneously; they measure calibration at different levels of conditioning, and the finding itself is direct empirical support for Eq. 1 — the same confidence number means something different depending on Rt.
EVIDENCE — Stage 7 (composite-level and single-dimension bucket calibration)
05
The composite regime space is real but heavily fragmented
Of dozens of exact six-dimensional composite regimes observed in execution-qualified forward samples, only a small handful reach any validated reliability tier under either of two independent scoring engines, and the two engines materially disagree with each other on several regimes from identical raw statistics. The theoretical combinatorial regime space is far larger than what real market conditions ever visit — consistent with, and now jointly tested alongside, Regime Intelligence's own standalone persistence hypothesis.
EVIDENCE — Stage 4/5 (exact regime reliability), Stage 8 (compression), cross-engine reconciliation

The same signal, priced differently under expansion versus normal volatility.

Regime Intelligence's expansion-state dimension — classifying the market as compressing, trading normally, or actively expanding on a short- versus long-window volatility ratio — offers a direct, isolable test of Eq. 1, because it can be held out from the other five regime dimensions and examined as a single conditioning variable against the identical execution-qualified signal population.

P(Yt = 1 | Xt, Et = EXPANSION)  ≠  P(Yt = 1 | Xt, Et = NORMAL)
Eq. 2 — Expansion-state instantiation of the combined hypothesis. Et ⊂ Rt denotes the volatility-expansion dimension of the composite regime state, isolated from the other five dimensions.

Within the execution-qualified structural-location breakdown, the expansion sub-split shows a clear divergence in realized hit rate for the identical underlying signal population:

80.65% hit rate
NORMAL EXPANSION STATE
Profit factor 2.62 on the largest of the three expansion-state subsamples within the location breakdown.
56.25% hit rate
ACTIVE EXPANSION STATE
Profit factor 1.40 on the largest subsample by count — the same signal, materially lower realized quality.
63.33% hit rate
COMPRESSION STATE
Profit factor 1.55 — intermediate between the other two states.
24.4pp spread
NORMAL VS. EXPANSION GAP
A materially large hit-rate divergence for the identical microstructure signal, conditioned on a single regime dimension alone.

Read plainly, this says the same order-flow displacement signal is a meaningfully better bet when the market is trading at a normal volatility regime than when it is already in active volatility expansion — plausibly consistent with the model identifying candidates closer to the start of a genuine move under normal conditions, and later, into an already-expanding and more exhausted move, under active expansion. This is a single-dimension result, correlated with the other five regime dimensions rather than fully isolated from them (Section 03 of Narion's Stage 3 market-context research), and should be read as illustrative support for Eq. 1 rather than as a standalone production filter.

Treating regime-conditional evidence with the caution small samples demand.

A joint hypothesis over a six-dimensional regime space multiplies the number of cells being tested far faster than forward data accrues. Narion's research program applies four specific statistical disciplines to keep regime-conditional claims honest.

Discipline 01
Wilson-Interval & Bayesian Scoring
A second, independently coded regime-scoring engine re-evaluates every exact composite regime using Wilson score confidence intervals on win rate and Bayesian-shrinkage expectancy, deliberately penalizing regimes whose apparent edge is inflated by a small sample — a materially more conservative floor than a raw point estimate.
Discipline 02
Episode-Level De-duplication
Raw signal counts and configuration-grid row counts are de-duplicated to independent market episodes — entries separated by a minimum time gap — before any hypothesis test is run, since a naive count can inflate the same market moment into dozens of apparently independent observations.
Discipline 03
Prospective Power Analysis
Rather than declaring a candidate regime confirmed or refuted on the evidence available today, the program computes the number of additional independent forward episodes required to detect a given effect size at conventional power, and reports that number as the honest cost of resolving the hypothesis.
Discipline 04
Multiplicity Correction
Where several regime-neighborhood candidates are tested against the same forward window, significance thresholds are adjusted (Holm–Bonferroni) across the family of tests, rather than evaluated as though each candidate were the only hypothesis being checked.
Discipline 05
Cross-Rule Reconciliation
Where two independent non-overlap or independent-trade definitions coexist in the research corpus, both are reported explicitly with their rule stated, rather than mixed silently in a single table — a specific, documented failure mode this program has caught in its own prior work.
Discipline 06
Terminal-vs-Executed Outcome Separation
Where a nominal take-profit/stop-loss architecture is specified but the take-profit level is never actually reached within a study window, reported profit factors are labeled as terminal-return statistics rather than executed-outcome statistics, since the two are not interchangeable.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR EQ. 1
A combined hypothesis over a joint (Xt, Rt) space is easy to appear to confirm through sample-size illusions — a handful of forward observations, resampled across many threshold and configuration combinations, can look like hundreds of independent confirmations. The disciplines above exist specifically to prevent that illusion from being mistaken for evidence, and Section 09 reports where they materially changed the program's own conclusions.

Not every regime-conditional finding carries the same weight.

Rather than a binary confirmed/rejected label, regime-conditional findings in this program are classified into four evidentiary types, extending the three-type taxonomy used in Narion's earlier regime research to a fourth type the joint (Xt, Rt) research specifically surfaced.

TypeDefinitionPolicy Implication
AEstablished historical evidence, calibrated across a large, statistically adequate sample.Eligible for SECONDARY-tier research status; still not a live-execution approval on its own.
BEstablished negative evidence — a regime with adequate sample size and a confirmed unfavorable outcome.WATCHLIST — retained as an active negative control, not silently dropped from the taxonomy.
CUnderpowered forward evidence that is directionally consistent with the hypothesis.RESEARCH — continued observation; explicitly not distinguishable from noise at conventional significance.
DForward evidence genuinely insufficient to distinguish the candidate from noise in either direction.RESEARCH, null-not-refuted — must not be reclassified as a negative finding on the same evidence that would be too thin to promote a positive one.
The symmetry principle applied throughout this program: if a small number of forward episodes is insufficient to promote a directionally positive candidate, the same small number is insufficient to retire a directionally negative one. Both are Type C or Type D evidence, not opposite conclusions.

What the combined program does not yet establish.

CRITICAL — REGIME-NEIGHBORHOOD FORWARD EVIDENCE IS SEVERELY UNDERPOWERED
A dedicated forward audit of regime-neighborhood candidates around a historically promising composite regime found that a multi-hundred-row research grid resolved, after de-duplication, to a small number of genuinely independent market episodes observed across only two calendar dates. No candidate in that audit reached conventional statistical significance, and the strongest candidate's apparent significance fell by roughly an order of magnitude once same-event duplication was corrected for. This is the program's single most important caveat on any claim that a specific regime-conditioned edge has been confirmed.
CRITICAL — EXECUTED PROFIT FACTOR IS UNDEFINED IN PART OF THE PROGRAM
In the same forward regime-neighborhood audit, a nominal take-profit level was never reached across the entire observed program. Every profit-factor figure above unity reported in that corpus is a terminal-return statistic computed at a fixed time horizon, not a realized executed-outcome statistic, and must not be read interchangeably with the executed profit factors reported elsewhere in this paper's core execution research (Section 04, Stage 2).
CAUTION — TWO INDEPENDENT REGIME-SCORING ENGINES DISAGREE
The exact-regime reliability engine and the Wilson/Bayesian validation engine, run against identical raw win/loss statistics, disagree on execution policy for several regimes — in at least one case moving from an active watchlist designation to an outright block on the same underlying sample. Neither engine is treated as authoritative; disagreement itself is treated as a reason for continued research rather than a tie-break in either direction.
CAUTION — SEVERAL HEADLINE FIGURES REQUIRED CROSS-SCRIPT RECONCILIATION
Multiple points in the underlying research corpus were found where independent audit scripts reported materially different figures for what was nominally the identical configuration on the identical sample — including one case where three scripts reported profit factors spanning roughly a factor of 2.7 for the same fixed exit architecture. This paper reports figures from the reconciled, cross-verified range rather than from any single unreconciled script, and treats the reconciliation discipline itself as a required part of any regime-conditional claim.
CAUTION — NO EXECUTION-COST MODELING
All figures throughout this program are gross of fees, spread, slippage, latency, and funding. A production configuration must incorporate realistic execution costs before any figure here is interpreted as a net achievable return.

Regime conditioning is real; production readiness is not yet.

The combined evidence supports Eq. 1 directionally, and in specific, well-sampled cases — extreme trend strength, VWAP positioning, and volatility-expansion conditioning — decisively. It does not yet support treating any single regime-conditioned configuration as production-ready. The binding constraint, consistently across every stage of this program, is independent forward-episode count, not model or regime-taxonomy design.

The recommended research agenda accordingly prioritizes accrual over further parameter search: freeze the regime taxonomy and candidate configuration for any regime under active forward study, apply mandatory episode-level de-duplication at collection time rather than retrospectively, pre-register a stopping rule (a minimum independent-episode count, tested once, with a single interim futility check) before evaluating significance, and apply multiplicity correction across every regime candidate tested concurrently. Further sensitivity-grid expansion over thresholds, horizons, or payoff structures is explicitly de-prioritized until episode count itself has grown, since the current program's own degeneracy analysis shows that expanding the grid without expanding independent episodes adds configurations without adding information.

Model_D's own IFAE validation program remains, independently, at the same disciplined stage — shadow-validated, not production-promoted, pending forward unseen-data confirmation. This paper's contribution is to show that the two tracks' combination is not merely additive: the regime dimension changes what a given microstructure reading should be taken to mean, in directions and magnitudes that are measurable today, even where the confidence to act on any single instance of that conditioning is not yet.

This paper states the combined governing hypothesis, the integration architecture, the structure of the empirical research program, and headline findings and limitations because that is what an academic-grade research publication owes its readers. It withholds the closed-form feature and regime-scoring mathematics behind Xt and Rt, and the exact internal thresholds and configuration parameters behind every reported result, because those remain the proprietary research infrastructure each standalone module was built to produce.

Combined hypothesis, published. Eq. 1 and its expansion-state instantiation (Eq. 2) are disclosed in full, as the joint research bet this paper exists to test.
Integration architecture, published. How Xt and Rt are computed independently and combined downstream is disclosed at the functional level.
Research program structure, published. The thirteen-stage pipeline and what each stage tests are disclosed.
Headline findings, published as results. The five key findings (Section 05) and the expansion-conditioning case study (Section 06) are disclosed with their supporting figures, consistent with how Narion discloses validation outcomes elsewhere.
